In the portraits that I create, my aim is to take a more expressive and liberal approach. I delve into the fantastical and into the subconscious to derive at what I feel are more interesting images rather than the straightforward gaze into the camera. My aim is to make the viewer stop and take a second look at what I have done. These may not hang in the living room. Just as the people we meet and interact with on a daily basis may never see the worst version of ourselves. Isn’t it strange that our worst sides are reserved for our loved ones?
I hope that the viewer does take a second look so that the beauty may be found in the process of creation, in the textures of the paint and in the play between the vivid and muted colors. I feel that the canon of beauty needs to be expanded in this new millennium.
